Adrian plans to marry Wanda and, with that intention, visits his fiancee's family house by the lake. Tensions rise when he is faced not only with Wanda's sisters but also with their mother's expectations. The end of summer. A house outside the city, by the lake. Night. In one of the rooms Marta and her husband, Tadeusz, are going to bed. Marta wants to make love, she desires him, but he does not want to. Marta sits alone on the porch - in the distance they can hear trains passing by. Then someone knocks on the window. A dark figure stands outside the window. Marta comes closer. The man introduces himself as her sister Wanda's fiancé - Adrian Snaut. They were not expecting him until the next day. With a candle in her hand, Marta leads him through the rooms arranged in an enfilade. Adrian Snaut sees the sleeping silhouettes of the household members. They reach the room of his fiancée Wanda. Adrian goes inside. He quietly undresses and slips into the sleeping woman's bed. He starts to caress her and they make love. Adrian Snaut is thirty-five years old, behind him is a broken marriage, clinical depression, addiction to psychotropic substances and the loss of his job at the ground control of "Okęcie" air traffic. Adrian arrives at the family home of his girlfriend, Wanda, to ask her mother for her daughter's hand. During the very first conversation, a conflict arises between Snaut and Wanda's mother, a domineering woman full of fears for her daughter's fate. The subject of the unpleasant conversation is Snaut's past. Adrian quickly realizes that he has a bad reputation in this family as a divorcee and drug addict, but he does not refuse an honest conversation on this subject, he reciprocates Wanda's mother's honesty and tells her what he knows and thinks about her past, which he knows from Wanda, and her relationship with her daughters. After an unpleasant acquaintance, Snaut asks Wanda for her hand. He does not receive an answer, but an offer to stay for a few days. His mother wants to get to know him better. Despite Wanda's opposition and her nervousness about this turn of events, Snaut decides to take up the challenge. Marta's husband - Tadeusz, a silent man his age, suggests that he leave, and half-jokingly - half-seriously warns him against his wife's family, while Adrian establishes an understanding with Marta. Snaut also meets the third oldest sister Basia, who is raising her daughter alone. At night Adrian and Wanda make loud love, even though the house is acoustic and everything can be heard through the walls. Adrian gets up at dawn and finds Basia awake with a syringe in her hand. He learns about Basia's insulin-dependent diabetes and goes with her for a morning walk to the lake. Basia considers herself a feminist. In her attitude towards men Adrian senses hostility resulting from the trauma she has experienced - Basia keeps the identity of her daughter's father a secret and raises the girl alone. When they return, the household is already awake. Wanda is playing with her niece, the others are preparing breakfast on the porch. Adrian, accosted by Marta in the hallway, starts talking to her and suddenly starts talking about her marriage, about her husband # talks about what he sees and feels - about the lack of love in her life. For Marta, these few words are a shock. Tadeusz and Zosia try to calm her down. Marta does not reveal to her loved ones what Snaut really did to her. Adrian slowly learns about the relations between the household members. He observes them in silence, his presence becomes embarrassing for everyone. Adrian notices Tadeusz's strange position in the house and his person begins to intrigue him. After dinner, while washing dishes, he tries to talk to Marta and apologize to her for his hurtful behavior, but their relationship only becomes more tense. The tension that is palpable for both of them is male-female. A completely different kind of tension appears between him and Basia, who senses a threat to the stability of the life of the house and the household members from him. In the evening, Adrian plays with Basia's daughter - a few-year-old Alicja. When the girl goes to take a bath, Snaut asks Basia about Alicja's father. Basia is neurotic and lives in fear. She treats Snaut's question as an attack. An ordinary conversation unexpectedly turns into a brawl, during which Basia has a diabetic attack and collapses. The ambulance takes her to the hospital. Everyone except Snaut goes with her and in a tense atmosphere entrusts him with the care of Alicja. Marta returns from the hospital. They talk in her car. Marta says that Basia had a heart attack. She blames Snaut. Distraught, she throws herself at him. Snaut tries to calm her down. Then they put Alicja to bed together and calm her down. Alicja wants both of them with her, so the three of them lie in bed, Snaut and Marta embrace the child, their hands meet in the darkness and intertwine. Then the rest of the household returns home from the hospital, all crying. Wanda, Adrian, Marta and Tadeusz take little Alicja to pick mushrooms in the forest. There, they want to tell the girl about her mother's death, but none of them has the courage to do so. Finally Snaut takes it upon himself and explains to Alicja what happened to her mother. In the forest Snaut talks to Marta for a while. The woman does not want contact with him, she runs away from him and from the feelings that are developing between them. She asks him to leave... Some time later Marta and Tadeusz come to visit Wanda and Snaut. During the visit, tensions grow between Marta and Tadeusz.
